Doosan Efficiency has partnered with Korea Southern Power to expand into the North American gas turbine service market, focusing on the growing demand for maintenance and upgrades in liquefied natural gas (LNG) power generation.
The collaboration was announced during their joint participation at the “7F Users Group Conference,” held from May 19 to 23 in Birmingham, Alabama. The event, celebrating its 35th year, is the world’s largest gathering for operators of 7F series (150MW) gas turbines, a key infrastructure in gas-based power generation. Of the 940-plus 7F units installed globally, about 660 are currently operating in the United States.
At the conference, the two companies gave their first-ever joint presentation on the theme of “Non-OEM Performance Improvement Success Cases.” The session introduced the advantages of using third-party maintenance services—referred to as Non-OEM—as an alternative to relying solely on original equipment manufacturers. Korea Southern Power shared insights from the operator’s perspective, highlighting cost savings and technical benefits.
Doosan Turbomachinery Services (DTS), a subsidiary of Doosan Energy based in Houston, showcased its capabilities in rotor, casing, and high-temperature component services. DTS Engineering Director Scott Keller emphasized the company’s technical strengths and the competitiveness of Korean gas turbine service solutions.
This initiative marks a significant step in the companies’ export strategy. In January, they launched the “Gas Turbine Export Community Team Korea,” aimed at promoting Korean gas turbine technology abroad. With LNG power generation gaining traction as a cleaner alternative to coal, the demand for turbine maintenance and refurbishment is expected to rise.
During the conference, Doosan Efficiency also signed a pivotal regeneration maintenance contract with Korea Southern Power to service 7F turbines in South Korea. The agreement covers inspection, repair, and replacement of critical turbine parts, ensuring operational efficiency and longevity. Notably, this contract is based entirely on domestic Korean technology—a first for the country’s gas turbine sector.
“This was the first joint announcement by a user and a supplier, and it played a vital role in promoting Korean gas turbine technology to North American clients,” a Doosan Efficiency official stated. “We aim to expand our global presence and strengthen the service ecosystem with our domestic partners.”
With DTS leading North American operations, Doosan Efficiency plans to ramp up sales and service initiatives in the U.S., leveraging growing interest in eco-friendly LNG-based power solutions.
