Wolters Kluwer Health has announced the development of a new Generative AI (GenAI) solution designed to streamline the creation of clinical practice guidelines, with a specific focus on oncology. The tool, called Ovid Guidelines AI, aims to transform how medical evidence is translated into structured, evidence-based recommendations.
The solution is being launched in partnership with the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and Google Cloud. A prototype, known as the ASCO Guideline Generator, will be showcased at the 2025 ASCO Annual Meeting in the “AI and Oncology” section of the Lakeside Lounge. The tool marks the first early adoption of the Ovid Guidelines AI platform and is expected to be publicly available in early 2026.
“Cancer researchers and care providers need every advantage to turn new discoveries into actionable care strategies,” said Stacey Caywood, CEO of Wolters Kluwer Health. “By building innovative AI tools like this, we can help accelerate the translation of trial results into structured recommendations that can improve patient outcomes.”
Embedding Scientific Rigor in AI-Driven Guidelines
Ovid Guidelines AI is Wolters Kluwer Health’s first agentic GenAI platform, designed to assist in the full lifecycle of clinical guideline development. The platform incorporates gold-standard frameworks such as PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) and GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation). By embedding these methodologies directly into the workflow, the solution ensures that clinical recommendations are transparent, justifiable, and regularly updated.
The AI platform also automates labor-intensive research processes, offering a centralized, auditable environment where researchers, expert panels, and review boards can collaborate. This setup allows organizations to manage guideline projects more efficiently while maintaining rigorous scientific standards.
ASCO Leads the Way in AI-Enhanced Oncology Practice
ASCO, widely recognized as a leading authority in oncology, is among the first medical organizations to integrate Ovid Guidelines AI into its operations. The ASCO Guideline Generator will help streamline the development and continuous updating of clinical practice guidelines in oncology.
“AI-powered tools like the ASCO Guidelines Assistant and the upcoming Guideline Generator will improve how clinicians access, use, and produce evidence-based content,” said Dr. Clifford A. Hudis, CEO of ASCO. “Ultimately, this will enhance patient care.”
Google Cloud Powers the AI Backbone
The collaboration also includes Google Cloud, whose technologies will power key components of the GenAI solution. Wolters Kluwer will use Google’s advanced Gemini models and the Vertex AI platform to enhance natural language processing, clinical content ingestion, and data handling.
“We’re focused on using AI innovation to solve real-world healthcare challenges,” said Aashima Gupta, Global Director of Healthcare Strategy & Solutions at Google Cloud. “By teaming up with ASCO and Wolters Kluwer, we’re helping oncologists access timely, evidence-based insights that can improve care for patients with cancer.”
Together, the three organizations aim to set a new standard for medical guideline development by applying scalable, intelligent, and reliable AI solutions to one of healthcare’s most complex and evolving fields.
