Mazda Unveils New EZ-60 Electric Crossover

by Anna

As leading automakers like Tesla and BYD dominate the electric vehicle (EV) market, Mazda is accelerating efforts to compete with a fresh offering: the all-electric Mazda EZ-60 crossover, inspired by the Arata concept. The model recently appeared in the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) database, signaling an imminent launch.

Technical Overview of the Mazda EZ-60

Built on the innovative EPA platform developed jointly with Chinese partner Changan, the EZ-60 features a modular “vertical sandwich” architecture. This design integrates the battery, electric motor, and chassis into a compact unit, cutting production costs and enhancing efficiency.

Styling highlights include an aggressive front bumper with a pronounced lower lip, slim headlights paired with LED daytime running lights, and a sleek continuous LED rear light bar featuring a prominent MAZDA logo. The “EV” badge confirms the vehicle’s all-electric status, distinguishing it from hybrid or extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants.

Measuring 4,850 mm in length, 1,935 mm in width, and 1,620 mm in height, the EZ-60 rides on a 2,902 mm wheelbase. Its electric motor delivers 255 horsepower and draws power from a lithium-iron-phosphate battery, though capacity details remain undisclosed. Reports suggest a driving range of up to 628 km. For extended range, an EREV variant with a 1.5-liter, 96.6-hp gasoline engine acts as a generator, allowing around 160 km of pure electric driving before the engine activates. The combined range for this version is estimated at approximately 1,300 km.

Interior and Comfort Features

Inside, the EZ-60 boasts a minimalist design centered around a massive 26.45-inch touchscreen that controls infotainment and vehicle settings. The sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel complements the premium feel. Front seats come equipped with heating and massage functions, enhancing comfort. Additional conveniences include wireless smartphone charging and a practical storage compartment in the center console.

Market Positioning and Launch Plans

Mazda positions the EZ-60 as a direct competitor to popular electric midsize SUVs such as the Tesla Model Y and BYD Sealion 6. Although official pricing is yet to be confirmed, estimates suggest a range between 150,000 and 300,000 yuan ($20,800 to $41,600). Despite the lack of a finalized price, pre-orders have already surpassed 20,000 units. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in August 2025.
