A newly commissioned vessel designed to support offshore wind activities in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region is set to accommodate the latest generation of wind turbines, industry leaders announced.
Lamprell, in collaboration with Dong Fang Offshore (DFO), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop a state-of-the-art wind turbine installation vessel tailored to the specific needs of the APAC market. Ian Prescott, CEO of Lamprell, emphasized the significance of the partnership: “We are pleased to be collaborating with Dong Fang Offshore on this important initiative to develop a wind turbine installation vessel aligned with APAC’s regional needs. This MOU reflects our commitment to supporting the global energy transition using the capabilities of our existing facilities and skilled workforce.”
The vessel, designed by GustoMSC and designated the NG-9000X, will be constructed in compliance with Taiwanese maritime regulations. It will feature advanced specifications including a heavy-lift crane, dynamic positioning system class 2 (DP-2), and legs equipped with spud cans to handle challenging seabed conditions. The ship will also provide modern accommodation quarters for the crew and personnel.
Lamprell highlighted that the vessel will have the capacity to transport and install two 15-megawatt class turbines simultaneously, significantly enhancing efficiency in offshore wind farm construction.
In related news, Dong Fang Offshore recently invested in Apex Aviation to establish what it describes as Taiwan’s first self-operated offshore wind helicopter fleet. Scheduled to begin service in the fourth quarter of this year, the fleet will facilitate personnel transport, emergency medical evacuations, equipment inspections, and maintenance operations for offshore wind projects.
