Turbine Installation Finished at Laos’ 600-MW Monsoon Wind Farm

by Anna

The 600-megawatt (MW) Monsoon Wind project in Laos, Southeast Asia’s largest wind farm and the country’s first, has completed turbine installation. This milestone marks a significant step toward exporting electricity to Vietnam.

All 133 turbines have been successfully erected, according to Ayala Group’s renewable energy platform, ACEN, which holds a 25% economic stake in the joint venture managing the project. The consortium includes BCPG Public Company Ltd, Impact Electrons Siam Ltd, Mitsubishi Corporation, SMP Consultation, and STP&I Public Company Ltd.

Located in the Sekong and Attapeu provinces of southern Laos, the Monsoon Wind farm is Asia’s first cross-border wind facility. It is scheduled to begin operations in late 2025. The electricity generated—estimated at nearly 1,500 gigawatt-hours (GWh) annually—will be sold to Vietnam Electricity (EVN) under a 25-year power purchase agreement.

Power from the wind farm will be transmitted through a 500-kilovolt (kV) line connecting Laos and Vietnam. Construction began in May 2023, with the first turbine installed later that year. Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) serves as the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor for the project.
