PDM Expands US Transformer Production in Utah

by jingji47

Power and Data Management (PDM) has launched a new manufacturing facility in Salt Lake City to address critical shortages of transformers and circuit breakers across North America. The Atlanta-based electrical equipment manufacturer will produce utility-grade transformers and high-voltage circuit breakers at a 350,000-square-foot campus operated by Quality Electrical Systems (QES) in West Jordan, Utah.

The expansion responds to surging demand from data centers, utilities, and industrial clients struggling with supply chain disruptions that began during the pandemic. “AI-driven data center growth has created urgent needs for medium-voltage transformers,” explained PDM President Jake Ring. The Utah facility aims to maintain 10-week lead times for oil-filled pad-mounted transformers, significantly faster than current industry averages.

PDM’s partnership with QES combines domestic manufacturing capabilities with global supply chain access. QES, a 30-year industry veteran, produces custom electrical equipment for major OEMs including GE/ABB and Danfoss. “This collaboration lets us leverage PDM’s transformer expertise while expanding our medium-voltage switchgear offerings,” said QES CEO Ken Worton. The alliance strengthens domestic production of UL-listed, DOE Energy Star-compliant power distribution equipment.

The new operation supports broader efforts to reshore critical electrical infrastructure manufacturing. PDM’s transformers meet NEMA and IEEE standards, while its XD|GE circuit breakers serve data centers and power substations. The company emphasizes rapid delivery alongside compliance with evolving energy efficiency and safety regulations.

As transformer shortages continue straining grid upgrades and data center expansions, PDM’s investment highlights growing industry efforts to localize production. The Utah facility positions the manufacturer to capitalize on federal infrastructure funding and corporate sustainability initiatives demanding reliable, American-made power distribution solutions.
