RTA Completes Final Bridge in Sheikh Rashid Road Development

by Anna

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has officially inaugurated the final bridge in the Sheikh Rashid Road and Al Mina Street intersection development project, marking a significant milestone in the Al Shindagha Corridor Development Project in Bur Dubai.

According to a report by WAM, the completion of this bridge now ensures a continuous flow of traffic from Al Garhoud Bridge to Port Rashid, via the Infinity Bridge, extending to the Waterfront Market. This marks the final phase of the project, which aims to streamline traffic and reduce congestion.

Improved Travel Time and Traffic Flow

One of the key outcomes of the project is the dramatic reduction in travel time across the corridor. Commuters now experience travel times as short as 12 minutes, down from the previous 80 minutes. For example, travel from Jumeirah Street to the Infinity Bridge now takes just five minutes. Similarly, trips from Infinity Bridge to Al Mina Street and the 2nd December Street intersection also require only five minutes.

The success of this development highlights the importance of advanced instrumentation in managing traffic flow, monitoring the infrastructure, and ensuring that the transportation network operates efficiently. Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, emphasized that the project is in line with the vision and directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, as well as Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.

Serving One Million Residents

The 13-kilometer-long Al Shindagha Corridor is set to benefit over one million residents and key developments such as Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, and Port Rashid. It spans key roads including Sheikh Rashid Road, Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street, and Cairo Street, featuring 15 intersections and 18 kilometers of bridges and tunnels. The project has boosted traffic capacity from 6,400 vehicles per hour to 24,000 vehicles per hour, reducing travel times significantly—from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes. The project is expected to deliver an economic benefit of Dh45 billion over the next 20 years.

Key Infrastructure Developments

Final Bridge at Sheikh Rashid Road and Al Mina Street: This bridge complex, totaling 3.1 kilometers, is composed of five bridges with a combined capacity of 19,400 vehicles per hour. It also includes two pedestrian bridges to improve safety for foot traffic.

Falcon Intersection: Located at the junction of Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road and Al Mina Street, the Falcon Intersection features three bridges and a tunnel, with a total capacity of 28,800 vehicles per hour. It includes key bridges along Al Khaleej Street and a tunnel that facilitates left-turn traffic from Khalid Bin Al Waleed Road to Al Mina Street.

Infinity Bridge: A landmark structure with a distinctive arch symbolizing infinity, the Infinity Bridge spans 295 meters and provides 12 lanes, accommodating up to 24,000 vehicles per hour. Additionally, the bridge includes a 3-meter-wide cycling track and a 75-meter-wide navigation channel for safe passage of vessels.

Bridges to Dubai Islands: To enhance connectivity to Dubai Islands, five new bridges have been constructed, offering direct access and a total capacity of 20,700 vehicles per hour. These bridges facilitate smooth movement from Al Khaleej Street and surrounding areas.

Deira Tunnel and New Bridge to Bur Dubai: The project also includes a 1,650-meter tunnel, currently 30% complete, that will link Infinity Bridge in Deira to Al Khaleej Street and Cairo Street. The tunnel will have three lanes in each direction, serving up to 12,000 vehicles per hour.
