Modvion Unveils World’s Tallest Wooden Wind Turbine, Revolutionizing Renewable Energy Infrastructure

by Anna

In a groundbreaking development, Swedish startup Modvion has introduced the world’s tallest wooden wind turbine, challenging the conventional use of steel in wind turbine construction. The innovative project aims to explore the viability and advantages of using wood, an organic material, for turbine towers and blades, showcasing its potential in optimizing performance and addressing environmental concerns.

Material Challenges in Wind Turbine Construction

Traditionally, steel has been the go-to material for wind turbine construction, constituting 66-79% of typical turbine models, according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. While steel offers strength and durability, it presents challenges related to transportation, as the components cannot be bent, disassembled, or compressed after manufacturing. This limitation poses difficulties in navigating transportation infrastructure, including overpass heights and turning radii.

Modvion’s Wooden Wind Turbine: Specs and Advantages

Modvion’s wooden wind turbine, already operational in Sweden, stands as the world’s tallest of its kind, reaching a height of 150 meters. The tower, constructed with 144 layers of laminated veneer lumber, along with the blades, can power up to 400 homes. The innovative design addresses the transportation challenge by breaking down the turbine into 28 connectable pieces linked with steel fittings, enabling easier shipping and assembly on-site.

The lightweight spruce used in the turbine facilitates rotation, maximizing power output. Beyond performance benefits, wood offers crucial environmental advantages, including the potential for reuse and carbon absorption. Additionally, the manufacturing process is considered carbon neutral, as the carbon-storing capacity of the trees offsets emissions associated with other manufacturing phases. Approximately 2,000 tonnes of carbon emissions are estimated to be saved for every wooden tower manufactured.
