Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division has secured the prestigious Red Dot Design Award for its SmartScan VR800, a breakthrough structured-light 3D scanner. Recognized for ergonomic design, innovation, and functionality, the device sets new standards in precision measurement with its motorized zoom lens—an industry first that delivers high-resolution scans in seconds.
Engineering Meets Aesthetic Excellence
The jury praised the scanner’s sleek, user-centric design, which aligns with Hexagon’s cohesive design language. “We simplify complexity to create intuitive tools,” said Matthias Wieser, Hexagon’s VP of Product Design. The carbon fiber frame and embedded control unit reflect rigorous R&D, while the closed zoom system eliminates manual recalibration—a game-changer for automotive and aerospace inspections.
Overcoming Technical Barriers
Developed with Hexagon’s Swiss Innovation Hub, the VR800 tackles longstanding challenges: “Integrating a zoom lens required rethinking thermal stability and portability,” noted Senior Product Manager Dirk Rieke-Zapp. The result? A 49–238-micron resolution range and single-process scanning, cutting downtime in quality control workflows.
Ergonomics for Humans and Robots
Designed for cobots and shop-floor use, the VR800 features an integrated controller (reducing cables) and a universal mount for robotic arms. Unlike traditional scanners with separate control boxes, it maximizes mobility—critical for factories adopting Industry 4.0 automation.
A Testament to Hexagon’s R&D Prowess
With 5,500+ patents and 15% of sales reinvested in R&D, Hexagon continues to lead in digital reality solutions. The VR800 exemplifies this ethos, merging sensor tech and AI to redefine manufacturing efficiency. “This award validates our focus on marrying beauty with purpose,” Wieser added.
