Croatian electrical equipment manufacturer Koncar Elektroindustrija [ZSE:KOEI] has announced the successful assembly, testing, and trial operation of a second generator at Sweden’s Balforsen hydropower plant.
The 59.5 MVA, 9.2 kV, 150 rpm generator, built by subsidiary Koncar – Generators and Motors, underwent a series of dry and wet tests before completing a 28-day trial run for operator Sydkraft Hydropower, the company said in its latest monthly newsletter. Financial terms of the project were not disclosed.
Located on the Ume River near Lycksele, the Balforsen plant has operated since 1958 and originally featured two vertical turbine-generator units. As part of an upgrade, the plant’s capacity has increased from 44 MW to 55 MW.
Following the successful commissioning, work has begun on the next phase—engineering for a third generator unit. Koncar will supply and install the new generator, with commissioning expected in early 2027.
Koncar’s shares closed down 1.85% at 532 euros ($598) on Tuesday on the Zagreb Stock Exchange. Wednesday’s trading had not started at the time of reporting.
