BYD’s 5-Minute Charging Revolutionizes EV Market

by Anna

BYD has introduced a groundbreaking electric vehicle (EV) charging technology capable of delivering up to 400 kilometers (249 miles) of range in just five minutes, a major leap forward in the EV charging infrastructure. This innovation, part of the company’s Super e-Platform, uses cutting-edge electrical equipment and generator technology to make charging as quick and efficient as refueling a gas-powered vehicle.

The system relies on a 1,000-volt architecture, providing 1,000 kW (1 megawatt) of power through 1,000 amps of current. This setup is supported by an all-liquid-cooled megawatt flash-charging terminal, an advanced silicon carbide power chip rated up to 1,500 volts, and BYD’s upgraded Blade battery. With 50% reduced internal resistance, the Blade battery allows for faster ion transport without overheating, ensuring that the generator technology can safely handle high-power charging demands.

This system boasts a peak charging speed of 2 kilometers per second (1.2 miles per second) and a 10C charging rate, which could theoretically allow a full charge in just six minutes. In addition, the BYD Han L and Tang L models come equipped with dual-gun charging, enabling two 500 kW chargers to work simultaneously, thus achieving a combined 1 MW output when dedicated megawatt chargers are unavailable. This dual-port system makes use of the generator technology to provide rapid power delivery across multiple vehicles.

In comparison to other industry leaders, BYD’s charging technology significantly outpaces competitors. Tesla’s V4 Superchargers, rated at 500 kW, add around 275 kilometers (171 miles) of range in 15 minutes, and the Mercedes-Benz CLA EV adds 325 kilometers (202 miles) in 10 minutes. With the use of advanced electrical equipment and high-output generators, BYD’s system provides up to 2-3 times faster charging, offering a substantial reduction in wait times for EV users.

To further extend the reach of its new system, BYD plans to build 4,000 megawatt flash-charging stations across China. The first 500 stations are expected to be operational soon, timed with the launch of the Han L sedan and Tang L SUV. This expansion will make the high-speed charging system accessible to more consumers, positioning BYD as a leader in the future of EV infrastructure.

This innovation in generator technology not only redefines the fast-charging process but also underscores BYD’s commitment to advancing electrical equipment for the electric vehicle market. With this breakthrough, BYD is setting a new benchmark in both energy efficiency and charging speed.
