Pila’s Plug-in Battery Provides Energy Independence

by Anna

As the demand for renewable energy grows, integrating solar and other green power sources can be challenging, especially for renters. Pila Energy, a company founded by former Tesla and SPAN engineer Cole Ashman, aims to address this issue with its innovative plug-in battery designed for easy use in any home.

The company was founded in response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, with a mission to provide “energy independence for everyone.” As natural disasters become more frequent and power grids age, Pila’s product offers a reliable energy source for those seeking independence from traditional energy suppliers.

Pila’s plug-in battery, unveiled at South by Southwest in March, represents a major shift in energy storage technology. Unlike traditional batteries, which can be expensive and complex, Pila’s solution is straightforward and adaptable. The battery’s mesh network allows multiple units to connect across rooms and appliances, making it easy to store energy from solar or other renewable sources. This technology can optimize energy use for potential power outages and even help reduce energy costs.

For renters, who often face barriers to installing solar panels due to landlord approval or limited space, Pila’s plug-in battery offers a portable solution. “For a renter, what’s most important?” Ashman told EnergySage. “You can take it with you when you move.”

The sleek design of the Pila battery allows it to sit neatly atop furniture such as refrigerators or workstations, making it both functional and unobtrusive. While the current 30% federal solar tax credit requires at least 3 kilowatt-hours of storage capacity, Pila’s 1.6 kWh battery can be paired with a second unit or an extension pack to qualify for the credit. Additionally, customers who preorder the battery can receive a $300 discount.

Pila plug-in batteries are expected to begin shipping in the second half of 2025. In a world where power reliability is increasingly uncertain due to climate change and natural disasters, Pila’s product offers peace of mind, ensuring that consumers can maintain energy access even during times of crisis.
