by Anna

EM Precision, a family-run subcontract engineering business specializing in CNC, milling, and turning, has expanded into a second unit at Jarrow Business Centre in South Tyneside following rapid growth. Founded in 2020 by Steve Cockburn, an engineering specialist with over 30 years of experience, EM Precision moved into the second unit in 2023 to meet increasing operational demand.

The company, which offers bespoke products and custom solutions for organizations across the UK and beyond, recently completed a project for a subsea company and has experienced sustained growth since its inception. Steve Cockburn credits the success to his years of experience, word-of-mouth referrals, and the support of his family. His wife Nicola assists with admin and accounts, while his father aids with deliveries, making it a true family effort. The business name, “EM,” even reflects the initials of Steve’s children.

EM Precision recently welcomed its first employee, Ian Bell, who brings 16 years of turning experience to the team, enabling them to take on a greater number of projects. Looking ahead, Steve aims to further expand the team, potentially taking on an apprentice to support someone at the start of their engineering career. The company plans to invest in more equipment to support this growth and is working towards ISO 9001 certification to enhance its quality management standards and expand its client base.

Cllr Margaret Meling, lead member for economic growth and transport at South Tyneside Council, expressed delight at EM Precision’s growth and job creation in the region. She praised Jarrow Business Centre for providing flexible office space and manufacturing units, facilitating the growth and expansion of businesses within South Tyneside.
