A new partnership is bringing autonomous UV disinfection robots to supermarkets across Europe, addressing growing concerns about germ contamination in retail environments. The collaboration between UVD Robots and OCC Commercial Consulting deploys self-navigating machines that eliminate 99.99% of harmful microorganisms, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria and SARS-CoV-2.
Tackling Grocery Store Germ Hotspots
Research reveals alarming bacterial contamination in supermarkets, with shopping carts harboring 361 times more germs than bathroom doorknobs and refrigerator doors carrying 1,235 times more bacteria than cellphones. The UVD Robots system specifically targets these high-risk areas—including produce sections, checkout lanes, and aisles—using powerful UV-C light technology that operates autonomously after store hours.
Autonomous Efficiency for Retail Spaces
The wheeled robots follow pre-mapped routes to disinfect approximately 700 square meters per hour, covering typical store layouts without human intervention. This automated approach solves previous challenges with UV disinfection, including shadowed areas and the need for manual repositioning of equipment. Store managers receive real-time compliance reports documenting each disinfection procedure’s effectiveness.
From Hospitals to Supermarkets
Originally developed to combat hospital-acquired infections, UVD Robots have expanded into various public spaces, with deployments in over 60 countries. The retail-focused partnership with OCC Commercial Consulting initially targets German markets before expanding throughout Europe. “Supermarkets need solutions that reassure both employees and customers about safety measures,” said OCC founder Salvatore Orto.
Long-Term Infection Prevention Strategy
Beyond addressing immediate COVID-19 concerns, the system provides sustainable protection against multiple pathogens. As UVD Robots CEO Per Juul Nielsen noted, the technology supports both urgent decontamination needs and ongoing hygiene strategies—a critical advantage as consumers grow increasingly conscious of retail cleanliness standards.
