DIAMOND BAR, Calif. – The South Coast Air Quality Management District has significantly expanded its clean-air initiative, now offering rebates for residents who replace gas-powered lawn equipment with battery-electric alternatives. The enhanced Residential Electric Lawn & Garden Equipment Rebate Program covers leaf blowers, trimmers, chainsaws and mowers, providing up to $250 per device with a maximum of three rebates per household.
Fighting Pollution One Lawn at a Time
South Coast AQMD officials revealed startling pollution comparisons to underscore the program’s importance. “Just one hour using a gas mower equals the emissions from driving to Las Vegas,” explained Executive Officer Wayne Nastri. Since 2017, the mower-only program eliminated 1.4 annual tons of volatile organic compounds – a figure expected to grow substantially with the expanded categories.
How the Rebate Program Works
Residents must purchase qualifying cordless electric equipment from authorized retailers and properly scrap their old gasoline models at certified facilities. The application process requires online submission with proof of purchase and destruction. Rebates are distributed first-come, first-served for equipment including weed whackers, edgers and brush cutters – all requiring included batteries and charchers to qualify.
Commercial Alternatives Available
While targeting residential users, South Coast AQMD maintains a separate commercial program offering landscapers up to 85% discounts on professional-grade electric equipment. Both initiatives aim to improve air quality across Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, including the Coachella Valley region.
