HESSTON, Kan. – Hustler Turf Equipment, now a Stanley Black & Decker brand, marks six decades as an industry pioneer since introducing the world’s first twin-lever zero-turn mower in 1964. The company has grown from its agricultural roots to become a leader in commercial and residential lawncare equipment, maintaining its reputation for durable, professional-grade products.
The Birth of a Revolution
The Hustler legacy began when Kansas farmer and inventor John Regier recognized the need for a more maneuverable mower while working at Hesston Corp. Combining farm machinery parts with innovative engineering, Regier developed the groundbreaking zero-turn design that would transform landscape maintenance. The mower’s namesake came from the B-58 Hustler bomber – a fitting tribute to its unprecedented speed and agility in the field.
From Farm Shed to Global Brand
Facing overwhelming demand for his invention, Regier partnered with Excel Industries in 1964 to scale production. This collaboration launched Hustler’s journey from regional innovator to international outdoor power equipment leader. The brand’s acquisition by Stanley Black & Decker in 2021 further expanded its global reach while maintaining its Kansas manufacturing roots and commitment to professional landscapers.
Continuing the Innovation Legacy
Today’s Hustler lineup includes award-winning models like the X-RIDE™ series, blending six decades of engineering expertise with modern technology. “We honor our heritage by continually developing products that work as hard as our customers,” said Karen Behm, Hustler’s Group Brand Manager. The company will showcase its latest innovations at Equip Expo in Louisville, where attendees can test equipment and enter to win a trailer package with two Hustler mowers.
As Hustler enters its seventh decade, the brand remains committed to its founding principles of durability, performance and customer support – values that continue driving its success in an evolving outdoor power equipment market. With new products and technologies in development, Hustler aims to maintain its position at the forefront of landscape maintenance innovation for professionals and homeowners alike.
