The trade association representing manufacturers emphasizes that simple preparation can prevent accidents and equipment failures during the busy yard work season.
Pre-Operation Checklist
OPEI President and CEO Kris Kiser recommends starting with manufacturer guidelines, which are often available online if the physical manual is lost. Equipment should undergo thorough inspections for damaged parts, proper oil levels and clean air filters. “We see many accidents that could have been prevented with basic maintenance,” Kiser noted. The institute particularly warns against modifying safety devices, a common but dangerous practice among some users.
Fuel and Battery Safety
The organization highlights two critical areas of concern: fuel management and battery care. Consumers should use fresh fuel in appropriate quantities and avoid storing equipment with fuel in tanks, especially in warm conditions that accelerate fuel degradation. For battery-powered equipment, OPEI stresses using only manufacturer-approved chargers and following specific storage guidelines to maintain battery health and safety.
Child and Pet Protection
A key safety message focuses on keeping children and animals away from operating equipment. “Lawn mowers and trimmers aren’t toys,” Kiser emphasized. “Creating physical separation between active work areas and play spaces could prevent tragic accidents.” The institute also recommends proper cleaning and dry storage after use to extend equipment lifespan.
Industry-Wide Standards
As an ANSI-accredited standards developer, OPEI works internationally to establish safety protocols for power equipment. The organization’s safety campaign aligns with its broader mission of promoting responsible equipment use through events like Equip Exposition and educational programs such as TurfMutt, which teaches environmental stewardship alongside equipment safety.
