Specialty chemicals leader Evonik announced on February 25 its plans to construct a pilot plant in Marl, Germany, dedicated to manufacturing its Duraion-brand anion exchange membranes (AEM). These membranes play a crucial role in AEM water electrolysis, a key process for generating green hydrogen. The company revealed that it is investing a low double-digit million-euro sum in the project, with operations expected to commence by the end of 2025.
High-Performance Membranes for Commercial Use
Evonik’s reinforced polymer membranes are engineered to allow the passage of anions while remaining impermeable to gases like hydrogen, which are byproducts of electrolysis. The technology is also designed to endure high pressure and temperature conditions, making it suitable for integration into commercial electrolyzer systems. Once operational, the plant will have an annual production capacity sufficient to support 2.5 gigawatts of electrolysis for hydrogen generation. Additionally, the facility will manufacture reinforced membranes, catering to rising demand for advanced AEM solutions.
Scaling Up Intermediate Production
Over the past year, Evonik has systematically expanded its output of intermediate materials used in membrane manufacturing. The new Marl facility builds on this increased capacity, marking a strategic move in the company’s broader effort to scale its membrane business.
