FirstEnergy Corp. is reminding families to prioritize electrical safety during the holiday season as part of National Safe Toys and Gifts Month. With drones topping wish lists again this year, the energy company emphasizes the importance of proper operation near power infrastructure. “Drones require the same responsibility as driving,” said Candace Webb, FirstEnergy’s Public Safety Manager, noting the company’s free Drone Safety Zone game teaches critical flying guidelines through interactive play.
The utility issued specific drone safety recommendations, including maintaining 200-foot clearance from power lines, flying below 400 feet, and avoiding nighttime or windy conditions. FirstEnergy warns against retrieving crashed drones near electrical equipment, advising customers to call their emergency line instead. These precautions help prevent power outages and protect both operators and utility workers during what’s typically a peak period for drone-related incidents.
Beyond drones, FirstEnergy highlights broader electrical safety considerations for holiday gifts. The company recommends verifying age appropriateness for all toys, securing battery compartments, and supervising children around electrical devices. Special attention should be given to button batteries—a common choking hazard—and power cords that could pose strangulation or shock risks.
FirstEnergy also cautions against overloading outlets with new electronics, a frequent cause of holiday electrical fires. The company suggests using surge protectors and avoiding water sources when operating electrical toys. These precautions align with FirstEnergy’s operational safety standards across its six-state service territory, where it maintains 24,000 miles of transmission lines.
As families exchange gifts this season, FirstEnergy’s safety campaign aims to prevent accidents while keeping power reliable. The company’s recommendations reflect growing concerns about technology-related hazards during holidays, when households typically introduce multiple new electrical devices simultaneously. By promoting awareness, FirstEnergy hopes to ensure seasonal celebrations remain both joyful and safe.
