Caterpillar and Flory Industries Collaborate on Innovative Lithium-Ion Battery-Driven Electric Powertrain for Nut Harvesting

by Anna

Caterpillar, a renowned powertrain equipment manufacturer, has joined forces with Flory Industries and Cat dealer Holt of California to introduce a groundbreaking lithium-ion battery-driven electric powertrain for nut harvesting. The collaboration aims to bring modern electrification technology to agricultural equipment, providing an efficient and sustainable solution for nut harvesting.

The partnership’s prototype nut harvesting elevator, in its final prototyping stage, is a towable elevator designed to lift harvested nuts from the harvester to the storage truck. The field testing phase is scheduled for the second quarter of 2024, with plans for final implementation and customer shipping projected by the 2026 harvest season.

One of the key advantages of electrification in agriculture is its appeal in reducing tailpipe emissions and minimizing hazards associated with chemicals and liquid fuel spills near food products. The lithium-ion solution replaces a 74 HP diesel generator traditionally used in harvesting elevators, offering equivalent output power for large motors.

Caterpillar’s modular lithium-ion battery, operating at 600 volts, forms a crucial component of the innovative electric powertrain. The battery’s design allows for monitoring and maintaining system health by closely monitoring temperature, voltage level, and cell balancing—a capability challenging for traditional internal combustion sources.
