Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA) has partnered with Glovis America to launch a fleet of 21 XCIENT hydrogen fuel-cell electric trucks for its supply chain operations. This initiative marks a significant step in the automaker’s commitment to carbon-neutral logistics, with the heavy-duty trucks transporting vehicle parts between suppliers and its Georgia-based Megasite facility.
Pioneering Zero-Emission Freight Transport
The Class 8 XCIENT trucks will initially shuttle components between regional suppliers and HMGMA’s Consolidation Center before expanding to a broader supplier network. Representing over one-third of Glovis America’s onsite fleet, these hydrogen-powered vehicles demonstrate Hyundai’s HTWO hydrogen business strategy—encompassing production, storage, and utilization across the clean energy value chain.
Building Hydrogen Infrastructure
Supporting the zero-emission fleet, HTWO Logistics (a Hyundai-Glovis joint venture) will deploy a mobile hydrogen refueling station at the Megasite while developing a permanent production and refueling facility. This infrastructure investment ensures efficient operations for the 36,000-pound GVWR trucks, which boast a 450-mile range on a single fill.
Scaling Clean Energy Solutions
The deployment aligns with Hyundai’s CES announcement of its HTWO hydrogen brand, representing:
- Production: Green hydrogen generation through renewable energy
- Storage: Advanced compression and transportation systems
- Utilization: Fuel cell applications beyond vehicles to power generation
Transforming Automotive Logistics
By integrating hydrogen trucks into its core supply chain, Hyundai establishes a replicable model for heavy-industry decarbonization. The Georgia initiative provides real-world data to refine hydrogen logistics ahead of broader commercialization, positioning Hyundai as a leader in sustainable freight solutions.
