A Yorkshire-based manufacturer with a storied history in aerospace engineering has taken a major step toward sustainability by installing 1,676 high-efficiency solar panels at its facility near Sheffield. W Fletcher, which produces precision engine components for aircraft, satellites, and nuclear projects, aims to slash energy costs while reinforcing its commitment to environmental responsibility.
Substantial Savings from Solar Energy
The solar array, covering 3,349 square meters of factory roof space, has already generated 23% of the company’s energy needs in 2024, delivering £87,000 in savings. Projections indicate total savings could reach £170,000 by year-end and £200,000 by 2029—funds that will be reinvested into advanced manufacturing equipment.
Bank-Backed Clean Energy Initiative
The £688,000 project was made possible through Lloyds Bank’s Clean Growth Financing Initiative (CGFI), which offers discounted lending for sustainable business upgrades. Rebecca Willis, Financial Director at W Fletcher, noted that previous solar proposals had been dismissed due to lengthy payback periods, but the bank’s support transformed the initiative into a viable long-term investment.
From WWII Cutlery to Modern Aerospace
Founded as a Sheffield cutlery maker during World War II, W Fletcher played a pivotal role in developing the Merlin engine for Spitfire and Lancaster bombers. Today, the company continues its legacy of precision engineering while embracing renewable energy to secure its future. Willis emphasized that the solar project not only cuts costs but also safeguards local jobs for decades to come.
A Model for Sustainable Manufacturing
Lee McAllister of Lloyds Bank praised W Fletcher’s leadership in combining industrial excellence with green innovation. The solar installation positions the manufacturer as a case study for how UK industry can reduce operational costs while meeting ambitious sustainability targets. With energy savings accelerating, the company is poised to reinvest in cutting-edge technology—proving that environmental and business goals can align seamlessly.
