Austrian tube stockholder Karl Mertl Handelsges, now in its third and fourth generation of family leadership, has invested in German-engineered Kasto sawing systems to streamline its operations. The company manages 8,000 tonnes of steel tubing in diameters ranging from 3mm to 660mm, with wall thicknesses up to 100mm, serving industrial clients across Europe.
Automated Cutting for Enhanced Efficiency
The firm’s 30,000 sqm warehouse in Austria utilizes ten Kasto bandsaws, including:
- KASTOtec – Optimized for high-volume cutting of hard materials
- KASTOtwin – Versatile general-purpose bandsaw
- KASTOssb – Compact vertical saw for precision bundle cutting
Marie Gruscher, a family member in management, noted: “Kasto’s technology integrates seamlessly with our packaging systems while improving workplace safety.”
Safety and Productivity Gains
The automated sawing systems reduce manual material handling, lowering accident risks. Intelligent controls store cutting parameters for consistent results, whether using bi-metal or carbide blades. The setup allows staff to work more efficiently as material comes to them, minimizing movement in the facility.
Proven Partnership Drives Investment
Having relied on Kasto equipment for years, Karl Mertl’s latest upgrade reaffirms its trust in the brand. “The service and product quality made this an easy decision,” Gruscher added. The saws’ precision and durability are critical for processing the company’s 7-meter-long steel tubes into customer-required lengths.
Future-Ready Tube Processing
With Jürgen Spannraft steering operations, Karl Mertl continues to leverage advanced sawing solutions to maintain its edge in Europe’s competitive steel distribution market. The Kasto systems ensure reliable, high-speed cutting—key to meeting industrial demand for precision tubing components.
