German machine tool specialist EWS Weigele GmbH has expanded its Varia product line with the introduction of the VXT quick-change system for static turning tools. The new system complements the existing VX range for driven tools, offering manufacturers a complete modular solution for turn-mill centers and multi-tasking lathes. Compatible with current VX users through a specialized interchangeable insert, the VXT system provides a cost-effective upgrade path for shops looking to enhance their flexible manufacturing capabilities.
Precision Engineering for Demanding Applications
The VXT mechanism combines compact dimensions with exceptional rigidity, enabling machining operations closer to the turret while maintaining stability during heavy cuts. Its innovative double-cone flex system incorporates elastic elements in the rear adapter cone and additional clamping screws in the shank area, delivering superior vibration damping that extends tool life and improves surface finishes. The system’s dual face-and-taper interface ensures precise tool tip orientation while handling up to 200 Nm of torque in the larger VXT4 configuration.
Micron-Level Repeatability Boosts Productivity
Engineered for high-precision applications, the VXT system achieves tool positioning repeatability within ±2 microns. Current testing suggests torque transmission capabilities may exceed the current 160-200 Nm ratings. The system supports through-tool coolant at pressures up to 80 bar and is available in both VDI and BMT configurations for star turrets, making it suitable for a wide range of turning center applications.
Reducing Changeover Times in Job Shops
The Varia.VXT’s quick-change capability significantly reduces non-cutting time during tool transitions, particularly beneficial for subcontract machining facilities handling diverse workpiece portfolios. By enabling rapid switching between static and driven tools within the same turret platform, the system helps manufacturers improve machine utilization while maintaining the precision required for complex, high-value components.
Future-Proofing Turning Operations
With its modular architecture and backward compatibility, the Varia system represents a strategic investment for shops transitioning to more flexible production models. The technology’s combination of precision, rigidity, and quick-change functionality addresses key challenges in modern turning operations, from reducing vibration in difficult materials to minimizing setup times for small batch production. As testing continues, EWS Weigele anticipates releasing enhanced performance specifications that could further expand the system’s application range.
