​​Rolls-Royce Develops Hybrid-Electric Turbogenerator​

Rolls-Royce has unveiled plans for an innovative turbogenerator system designed to extend the range of hybrid-electric aircraft. The new technology, currently under development by teams in Germany, Norway, and Hungary, will offer scalable power between 500 kW and 1200 kW, bridging the gap between battery-electric propulsion and conventional aviation. This onboard power source will initially run on sustainable aviation fuels before transitioning to hydrogen combustion as the technology matures, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing air travel.

The turbogenerator serves a critical role in Rolls-Royce’s electrical propulsion strategy, recharging batteries mid-flight or directly powering propellers as needed. This dual-function capability allows aircraft to optimize power usage dynamically, enabling longer routes that pure battery systems cannot currently support. The German Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is partially funding the project, underscoring its potential to reduce emissions in regional air mobility. Rob Watson, President of Rolls-Royce Electrical, emphasized that this technology will help scale hybrid-electric solutions to larger aircraft platforms over time.

Rolls-Royce’s electrical division aims to become the leading provider of propulsion systems for Advanced Air Mobility, including urban air taxis and regional commuter aircraft. While current battery technology limits all-electric aircraft to short hops between cities or island networks, the turbogenerator will unlock extended-range hybrid operations. The company also plans to leverage its existing service network to maintain these electrical systems and develop mtu microgrid solutions for fast-charging infrastructure at vertiports.
