AEM Powers Up Workforce with Electrification Training

by jingji47

Advanced Electric Machines (AEM), a Washington-based pioneer in rare earth-free electric motors, has become an early adopter of the new Electrification Skills Training Programme. The specialist manufacturer recently sent 25 employees through the intensive three-day bootcamp following a successful £23 million funding round to support its growth plans. The training initiative, developed through collaboration between Coventry University and North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College, addresses critical skills gaps in Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD) technologies.

Customized Curriculum for Diverse Engineering Needs

The modular programme covers fundamental through advanced concepts in electrification, including:

  • Electronic circuits and high voltage systems
  • Motor typologies from DC to synchronous designs
  • Power electronics including MOSFETs and IGBTs
  • Inverter technology and motor drive systems

AEM co-founder James Widmer emphasized the programme’s value for cross-training engineers recruited from other sectors like aerospace and oil & gas. “With electrification jobs outpacing skilled workers, this initiative helps bridge the gap while allowing existing staff to refresh or advance their knowledge,” Widmer explained. The company plans to significantly expand its 80-person workforce in coming years to meet growing demand for its sustainable powertrain solutions.

Industry-Led Training Model Gains Momentum

Developed with input from major automotive suppliers including ZF and FEV, the bootcamp format allows flexible participation to minimize disruption. AEM reported strong positive feedback from participants across various roles – from production staff to supply chain managers. Coventry University’s PEMD experts tailored content based on real-time feedback during the pilot delivery at AEM’s facilities.

Scaling Nationwide to Meet Sector Demands

With the development phase complete, programme organizers are preparing for full rollout across the UK’s electrification sector. Academic director Petar Igic confirmed the adaptable curriculum can meet specific employer requirements while maintaining rigorous standards. Widmer, who chairs the ERS Hub Advisory Group, advocates for licensing the programme to accelerate skills development nationwide.

Sustainable Technology Requires Skilled Workforce

AEM’s participation underscores how workforce development complements its mission to produce recyclable motors without rare earth materials. As the company expands into commercial vehicles, passenger cars and industrial applications, investing in human capital has become as crucial as technological innovation. The training initiative provides a model for how growing electrification firms can rapidly upskill teams while attracting talent from adjacent engineering fields.
